Healing Touch

The Healing Touch ministry is grounded in the teachings of Jesus and our Christian faith, and in the ancient tradition of hands on healing, as portrayed in the Scriptures and reflected in almost every major religion.

The basic thesis of Healing Touch and other energy work is that the human body is surrounded by fields of energy. Healing Touch works with that energy system around the body to remove blocks to the energy flow, to bring relaxation, to help in pain management, and to effect feelings of peace and well-being,  It is not a cure for a specific remedy, or a substitute for medical attention. Rather, it is complementary to other forms of treatment.

Healing Touch works to restore wholeness of body, mind and spirit.   Healing may take place on any of these levels.

What Are Its Benefits?

Healing Touch has been documented and proven to be helpful in promoting relaxation, reducing pain, and managing stress.   It also can be effective in speeding tissue and bone healing, and strengthening the immune system.  Many people have described an increased sense of well-being after treatment.  For those grounded in the Christian Faith, that may play out as a sense of being enveloped in God’s healing love.

Some specific applications:

  • Joint pain from arthritis, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia
  • Depression
  • Childbirth
  • Strengthening immune system
  • Before and after surgery

“Every human being has a great, yet often unknown gift to cure, to be compassionate, to become present to the other, to listen, to hear and to receive.”

       Henri J.M. Nouwen

 How Does It Happen?

You will remove your shoes, and sit in a chair, or lie on a massage table.  The practitioners will ask you if you have any questions, or if there is something that particularly needs attention during the session.  After a time of centering and prayer, asking that they become channels of God’s Light, love and healing, the practitioners will make gentle, slow hand movements around the body. A light touch may be used, if that is agreeable, and the feet held.  During the session, you are free to talk or not, ask questions, and if at any time you feel uncomfortable, to stop the treatment.  The length of treatment varies from 20 to 45 minutes.

You may feel sleepy, relaxed, and perhaps emotional, during treatment.  Some people feel changes in temperature, and tingling in their bodies.  Pain is often lessened or gone.  Usually people feel a sense of peacefulness after the session.

Who Offers Healing Touch?

The Healing Touch Ministry is part of the Pastoral Care of Knox United Church.  The people who offer Healing Touch have taken courses offered through Healing Pathway, the governing body of Healing Touch for the United Church, based in Naramata.  In these courses, as well as learning technique, time is spent deepening one’s theological and spiritual understandings, becoming heart centered, grounded and rooted in the light of Christ and the healing love of God.  The healing touch team meet regularly for practice, meditation, review of techniques, and to offer treatments to members of the congregation and to the community.  As well, we are active in United Hands, an organization in the lower mainland that mentors, supports and encourages congregational healing.  We are committed to shared leadership, mutual support, and ongoing learning.

The Healing Touch Ministry meets to offer treatments in the Knox United Church Fellowship Centre, 5600 Balaclava St., on the first and third Tuesday of the month at 1:00 p.m.

Please confirm sessions with the church office at 604 261 3747.

Treatments are offered to the congregation and to the community at no cost.  If one wishes, a donation may be made to Knox United Church.  We also visit hospitals for congregational members, or their homes on request.
