FAMILY ACTIVITIES

Explore your Voice

1. Listen to all of the voices around you, either outside when you go for a walk or on the radio or tv. What do all of the voices have in common? What makes each of them different? Try making your voice sound different by making it higher or lower, louder or softer. Can you speak with a different accent? Try picking one word and saying it as many different ways as you can. Does saying it a different way change its meaning?

2. Get a large piece of paper and a marker. As a family, take turns writing as many words as you can think of that fit into different categories. Here some ideas to get you started but feel free to come up with your own!

- Words that can make someone feel special

- Words that can make someone sad feel better

- Words that make you giggle

- Words that describe members of your family

- Words that can help you make a new friend

- Words that can stop someone who is bullying another

- Words that can make the world a better place

- Words that describe God

3. Your voice is a very powerful thing. It can be kind, but if you’re not careful, it can also hurt. Make a poster using the saying below. Then put it up somewhere to remind you to always use your voice in a positive way.

BEFORE YOU SPEAK, THINK.

T Is it True?

H Is it helpful?

I Is it inspiring?

N Is it necessary?

K Is it kind?

Video Story Time

The first story is called “Say Something” by Peter H Reynolds. It’s a powerful reminder of how we can all use our voices to change the world. After watching the video, think of some things that you can say to make a difference.

The second story is called “But Not The Hippopotamus” by Sandra Boynton. Watch how a few simple words help a lonely hippo find some friends.

Use Your Voice to Sing Together

Spend some time this week singing together as a family. If anyone plays an instrument, get it out and play along. What are your favourite songs? Are there songs which have words with special meanings for anyone?

Maybe you can write your own “family song” using some of the words you came up with in the categories above. How does it feel to use your voices together?

Here are the words to a few songs we often sing at Knox…

THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE

We are all God’s children so let your light shine, let your voice sing and spread some love around the world!

This little light of mine

I’m gonna let it shine

This little light of mine,

I’m gonna let it shine

This little light of mine,

I’m gonna let it shine

Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine

Hide it under a bushel? No!

I’m gonna let it shine… (x3)

Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

Don’t let anyone blow it out

I’m gonna let it shine… (x3)

Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

Let it shine in my hometown

I’m gonna let it shine… (x3)

Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

See the light spreading ‘round the world,

See all the faces shine…(x3)

Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
