UPDATED - January 18, 2016
Plans are proceeding for an evening at Knox called Syria 101. As we welcome Mohamad and Omar, folk from the various congregations sharing this sponsorship initiative will have an opportunity to experience and learn about the food, culture, history and religion of Syria, and share a buffet dinner together. This event is being planned by and for folk from all the sponsoring congregations. Our Knox team will have the gift and responsibility of arranging / creating a welcoming space, hosting the buffet (which will be catered) and providing a warm and welcoming presence. Maisaloon ( one of the Climate Change speakers) and her parents plan to be with us to translate and facilitate conversation. Tickets will be on sale soon, but in the meantime, save the date and plan to attend.
Our exciting news is that our first two refugees have arrived and are settling into their new home. Mohamad arrived Dec 19th and his brother Omar arrived one week later. Much work has already been done by members of the multi congregational team of experienced folk with whom we are sharing this endeavour: bank accounts established; paper work for MSP has been completed; as of this week both Mohamad and Omar are in full day English language classes at VCC; sources of familiar food (they observe halal) have been located; Compass cards have been procured and are being successfully used as they travel to and from classes and around town; cell phones and basic computers have been donated and set up.
Planning for a community-wide event to be hosted at Knox is under way. Tentatively named “Welcome Syrians,” this evening will be and opportunity to meet Omar and Mohamad, to begin to learn about their country and culture, and to share a buffet dinner together. Tickets will be on sale soon, but in the meantime, save the date and plan to attend.
Your financial response to this appeal has been most gratifying. Thank you to everyone who has committed to this important humanitarian work.
