Knox United Church 100th Anniversary
Reunion Weekend, September 24, 25, 26, 2010
In the summer of 1910, the first service of what would become Knox United Church, was held in a home on Wilson Road (now 41 st Ave.), in Vancouver. Knox has had a strong history over the years, in the community. The church is a beautiful sanctuary of space, and the congregation of Knox has always been known, over the 100 years, as a friendly, open and spiritual family. In this, our 100th year as a congregation, we have "honoured our past", with several anniversary events. Our Reunion Weekend is our huge event, and is now just a couple of months away. We want to welcome back members of the Knox family, to join with us, for all or some of the weekend's festivities, which are outlined below. Our weekend culminates in a celebration Sunday worship service to "embrace our future".
CHILDREN
There will be programming for children during the Friday evening, Saturday morning and early afternoon, and, of course, during the worship service time on Sunday morning. Supervised programming will include age-appropriate activities such as arts and crafts, movies and games. As we determine age groups of children attending we will formulate these plans fully.
BILLETS / PLACES TO STAY
Are you visiting from a distance? Do you have family and friends with whom you might stay, or do you need a place? We are hoping to arrange billets for those who need space to lodge for Friday and Saturday nights. Let us know if this is of interest to you, or, conversely, if you are able to provide some space for a billet.
MEMORABILIA
Do you have photos or other memorabilia to display? If you live close by, please drop photos and other items off during September (labeled with name, phone number, etc.), and we will work at creating displays. For those coming from afar, we still want your memorabilia, so bring it with you. We know that others will want to share the fun of the memories. All items should be taken away with you, or picked up in the week following the Reunion.
ATTENDING? THAT'S GREAT! PLEASE CLICK HERE TO READ THE REGISTRATION. PLEASE REGISTER, BY RETURNING YOUR FILLED-IN REGISTRATION SHEET AND CHEQUE, BY POST. A RETURN ENVELOPE IS IN THE PACKAGE SENT TO THOSE FOR WHOM WE HAVE A STREET ADDRESS. FOR THOSE ONLY ON OUR EMAIL LIST, PLEASE PRINT THE FORM AND RETURN IT TO US, WITH YOUR CHEQUE, BY POST. THANK YOU.
NOT ABLE TO ATTEND?
We'd love to have you with us for the event, but if you cannot be there perhaps you'd like to jot down a message about where you are now and what you are doing in life. Maybe there is a story you'd like to share? We'll have a space set aside for these messages, which will garner lots of attention we are sure. |

"Welcome Back"- Friday, September 24, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
This evening is an informal gathering, with light desserts and beverages. Come along and visit, reminisce, enjoy photos and memorabilia, and have a chance to find out about the next major steps and changes for Knox as we embrace the future.
Saturday, September 25, beginning at 9:15 a.m.
Have you been part of the music making at Knox? This time will be a choir rehearsal for a massed choir of current and former Knox singers in preparation for a concert at 4:00 in the afternoon. Rehearsal will be from 9:15 to 11:15 a.m., in the church chancel. We will have a short time to pull together the music, but, if the spirit is willing - and the audience is understanding.
Were you one of the "Youth Choir"? It would be amazing to gather some of the 'girls' together for a couple of pieces. This rehearsal will run from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., in the church chancel. We can do it! Let's give it a try! (Youth Choir singers are also most welcome to join the choir at 9:15 a.m.)
Ongoing displays that "honour our past and embrace our future" will be available in the Fellowship Building during the day.
We will provide a list of local restaurants where you might enjoy lunch.
A CONCERT , in the sanctuary, at 4:00 p.m ., is a chance to enjoy the "Reunion Choirs", as well as some of our 'solo singing' members, and instrumentalists, past and present. This should be a fun event! One of our Knox statements is that we are "open to the unexpected..."
From 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. is a social gathering time, with catered DINNER, served at 6:30 p.m ., followed by entertainment (time for some more lighthearted fare). Worship - Sunday, September 26, at 10:00 a.m.
Come to a special service of celebration of the future of Knox.
Would we be Knox without a special cake following the service? There will be cake!
Men's Breakfast Group
The Men's Breakfast Group has, for many years, been a special time where men gather for conversation, laughter, and a good breakfast. The group meets once a month and functions with no committees, no presidents...just an opportunity to be there! Despite the early start (7:30am on a Saturday morning) the men still find reason to come and share the fellowship. In recent years, we have invited the men from our neighboring church, Dunbar Heights United, to join us and now our gatherings alternate between the two churches.
Together we bring encouragement, discuss the issue of the week, or share information on community events where we can participate or become involved as the Spirit moves us. This is a friendly and relaxed time in a busy world. Please check our calendars for dates and location. You will be most welcome!
Opera Previews at Knox – 2009/2010 Season - David
Godin
Vancouver Opera’s 50th anniversary season promises to be a memorable
one, and will feature works by two of the most popular operatic
composers (Mozart and Puccini), a bel canto masterpiece by Bellini and
the exciting company premiere of a contemporary classic by the highly
touted American minimalist composer John Adams.
The first opera of the season - Bellini’s Norma - transports us to
ancient Gaul and the mysterious rituals of the Druids. This work deals
with a recurrent theme in opera - the conflict between love and duty.
Norma contains an unsurpassed richness of long-spun melody and is
considered a quintessential exponent of the “bel canto” (“beautiful
singing”) school of opera where vocal expression reigns supreme. The
leading role represents the ultimate challenge for any dramatic
soprano’s interpretive skills. Richard Bonynge, a bel canto specialist
whose wife, Joan Sutherland, was one of the most famous exponents of the
demanding title role, will conduct. The preview for this production will
be held on Sunday November 22nd, 2009.
The
next production will coincide with the eagerly anticipated 2010 Winter
Olympic Games and will feature the Canadian premiere of John Adams’
Nixon in China. This landmark work depicts the history-making visit of
Richard Nixon to Beijing in 1972 and it is the first of several notable
newsworthy events that have served as inspiration for Adams’ highly
successful works for the operatic stage. Nixon in China is a fascinating
character study of the differing east-west mind-sets of the iconic
figures of Mao Tse Tung and Richard Nixon, as well as their respective
wives and Henry Kissinger. This brand new production will be created by
the noted American designer Erhard Rom with choreography by Wen Wei
Wang. The strong cast will feature a number of performers who have been
highly acclaimed for their respective roles in this challenging work.
The preview for Nixon in China will be held on Sunday March 7th, 2010.
Mozart’s “Marriage of Figaro” has been called “the most perfect of
operas”. The story is a sequel to “The Barber of Seville” and - as is
the case in so many of Mozart’s operas - deals with interpersonal human
relationships. The troubled marriage of the Count and Countess Almaviva
(the now middle-aged young lovers from “Barber”) is juxtaposed with the
optimistic love of their servants Figaro and Susanna who have recently
become betrothed. The tension between upper and lower classes (with the
latter invariably being shown to be morally and intellectually superior)
created quite a stir when the work was first produced, and in the words
of one commentator: “the sounds of the impending French Revolution can
already be heard in Figaro”. Mozart’s miraculous score encompasses a
wide spectrum of human emotions: love, jealousy, self-centered
arrogance, honour, marital fidelity – and most of all, the transcendent
power of forgiveness. The preview for “Marriage of Figaro” will be held
on Sunday April 18, 2010.
Vancouver Opera’s Golden Anniversary season
concludes with Puccini’s ever-popular Madame Butterfly. This
emotionally shattering work deals with the consequences of an
interracial liaison that begins idyllically and culminates in tragedy.
As with Nixon in China, this opera explores the cultural gap between far
eastern and American sensibilities. Puccini’s richly orchestrated score
combines authentic Japanese motifs with lush Italianate melody and the
work is unsurpassed in its visceral impact and dramatic intensity. The
production will feature striking stage designs by the Japanese-born
visual artist Jun Kaneko. The preview for Madame Butterfly will take
place on Sunday May 23th, 2010.
All opera previews will be held in the Knox
Fellowship Hall and begin at 3:00 P.M. Light refreshments will be
served at the break. Admission is by donation, with all proceeds going
towards the ongoing ministry of Knox United Church.
