What do I need to know about coming to Knox United Church ?

Presumably, first time visitors to Knox are arriving to a worship service on a Sunday morning. We hope this information will help you feel at home.  There is also a downloadable brochure available at the bottom of this page, if you'd like to read more:

  • Sunday worship begins at 10:00 a.m., with most people arriving at about 9:55 a.m. Most services are over by about 11:15.
  • There is ample parking in the lot behind the church, or on the street.
  • Do let someone in the narthex (the lobby area) know that you are visiting, as you collect an order of service. We'd like to get to know you. There is a guest book there for you to sign, too, if you so wish.
  • We're not in the practice of passing the offering plate or basket during the service. Instead, there is a box - just by the door into the sanctuary - which is labeled 'Offering'.  If you are able to give an offering, just drop it in that box as you enter.  The box will be brought forward during the service for dedication.  We thank you for any offering you choose to give.
  • If you require a headset to enhance hearing, please speak to one of the ushers as you enter the narthex, and he/she will be pleased to assist you.
  • We are very comfortable with the happy noise of children during worship.  If you have young people with you, there is an area near the front of the sanctuary on the east side, where kids are welcome to be comfortable, with quiet toys, books, basic art supplies and activities. There is a time during worship for Children of All Ages.  At that time, children (of all ages) are invited to join on the steps at the front for conversation (everyone else listens in, too).
  • At an appointed time during the service, our Youth Coordinator will invite older children and youth to the Fellowship Centre for conversation and activities.  Sometimes kids stay in the sanctuary for the whole service and participate in worship.
  • We generally celebrate the sacrament of Communion on the first Sunday of each month.  In the United Church, all are welcome at the table - including children, if they wish.  If you prefer not to take communion, you are welcome to remain in your place.
  • Many people prefer to remain seated during the final piece of music (the 'Postlude'), but it is intended to be music to usher people out - so please feel free to move at that time.
  • Everyone is invited to come across to the Fellowship Building, to enjoy a cup of tea, coffee or juice, a cookie and conversation after the service.
  • We welcome anyone to come along and worship with us, and to come back and get involved, if you are so inclined. We have pamphlets available about the various programs at Knox. We hope you feel at home here!
